Siena Heights University making college more accessible for Hispanics through new partnership.
ADRIAN, Mich. (WTVG) - Siena Heights University is taking strides to make college affordable for everyone by launching a new tuition program in partnership with the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to help members of the Hispanic community.
Leaders of this partnership hope this program will bring more students to Siena Heights and prepare them for, or improve their career plans after college.
“This university has always taken great pride in welcoming students for whom higher education has not always been a reality. And so this is part of what we’re doing,” said Douglas Palmer, president of Siena Heights University.
Through this new program, eligible MHCC employees and members, along with their dependents, will receive a 25% discount for SHU’s undergraduate, online and graduate degree programs.
“It’s ultra important for businesses and academic institutions alike to take note of the impact that the Latino community is going to continue to have in our state and across this country. And what it will mean for them competitiveness wise, innovation wise, and just to continue to foster a solid education for all students,” said Mark Moreno, executive director of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Some current Hispanic students said this is huge for the future.
“I just feel like at least knowing that you have an option to go to college because I know college isn’t for everyone, I just feel like it’s very important, especially in Hispanics,” said Jesus Alvarez, a freshman at SHU.
“Hearing about all the new opportunities for all the incoming classes. It’s great knowing that they’re gonna have what others didn’t have and knowing that they’re going to be able to succeed more,” said Nelson Juarez-Lopez, a sophomore at SHU.
And that’s exactly what leaders hope will happen.
